A source confirmed to the Starkville Daily News on Wednesday that Mississippi State has hired former Iowa State cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist as safeties coach.

Mississippi State hasn’t officially announced the hire.

Linguist takes over as a coach in the secondary for the Bulldogs following the departure of Deshea Townsend last month. Townsend left MSU to take an assistant coaching job with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

Recent hire Terrell Buckley will also coach in the Bulldogs secondary as he leads the cornerbacks.

Linguist was a 2006 graduate of Baylor. Upon his graduation, he earned his first coaching job on the Baylor staff as a graduate assistant.

Linguist also has coaching experience at Buffalo, James Madison and Valdosta State.
