Punter Devon Bell has become the fourth member of the Mississippi State football team to make preseason watch lists for national awards.
The Augusta Sports Council announced on Thursday that Bell was on the 25-man Ray Guy Award Watch List. The Ray Guy Award goes to the best punter in the country.
“I’m just going out there and doing what I can to help my team this year,” Bell said in the spring.
Bell has appeared in 36 games over three seasons and took over as the primary punter as a junior last season.
In two seasons as punter, Bell had 16 punts of 50 yards or more with 32 punts landing inside the 20-yard line.
Bell was a placekicker early in his career with the Bulldogs and has remained a factor on kickoffs. He could still figure into those plans as he enters his senior season.
The added responsibility won’t be an issue for Bell.
“I’m pretty comfortable with it,” Bell said. “I was prepared for it (in the spring) and I’m taking advantage of it now.”
Bell hit six of 14 field goal attempts last season as MSU struggled overall, only hitting 10-of-21 attempts.
The 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award will be announced on Nov. 13.
Along with Bell, quarterback Dak Prescott, defensive lineman Chris Jones and defensive back Will Redmond were Bulldogs recognized on watch lists earlier in the week.
