A source says catcher Elih Marrero will come to Starkville and play for Mississippi State instead of going pro.
He was drafted in the 29th round – 865th overall pick – by the Cincinnati Reds. Marrero’s father, Eli, played 10 seasons in the MLB. He is currently the manager of the Reds’ Class A-Advanced affiliate, the Daytona Tortugas.
The Coral Gables, Florida, native is one of three MSU signees drafted to keep their commitment to the Bulldogs. Left hander Jared Padgett and shortstop Delvin Zinn have already turned down major league teams and will be in Starkville this coming fall.
Ausitn Riley and Greg Pickett have already signed with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies respectively. Gray Fenter is the only MSU signee who was drafted left to announce his decision. He is expected to sign with the Baltimore Orioles.
