Preston Smith was the first former Mississippi State Bulldog taken in the 2015 National Football League Draft.
The defensive end was taken with the sixth pick in the second round – 38 overall – by the Washington Redskins Friday night.
The Stone Mountain, Ga., native had an outside chance of going in the first round on Thursday, but was not selected.
He had his best season as a Bulldog last year as MSU rose to No. 1 for five-straight weeks with the the help of Smith. He totaled 48 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two interceptions, 15 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks this past season.
He is the 14th different Bulldog under head coach Dan Mullen to be drafted since 2010. He is the fourth different defensive lineman taken during that span.
Former Bulldog linebacker Benardrick McKinney was still on the board.
