Report: Howland, MSU reach verbal agreement

Mississippi State and Ben Howland have reached a verbal agreement for Howland to take over the men’s basketball program ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported Monday morning.

The university had no comment.

MSU fired Rick Ray after three seasons on Saturday. He went 37-60 in his first head coaching job.

Howland spent 10 seasons at UCLA before being fired in April of 2013. During his times with the Bruins, he went to three-straight Final Fours from 2006-08, including a runner-up in 2006. He also won the Pac-12 regular season title in his final season.

Before going to Los Angeles, Howland coached at Northern Arizona and Pittsburgh. He won league titles at both schools. Howland owns a 399-208 overall record.

He hasn’t coached the past two seasons, and has been a color commentator for both Fox Sports and NCB Sports college basketball broadcasts.
