NBCSports.com reports that Ben Howland has emerged as a serious candidate to be the next head coach at Mississippi State.
Rick Ray was fired after three seasons at the helm of the Bulldog program on Saturday afternoon. He had an overall record of 37-60.
Howland spent 10 seasons at UCLA before being fired in April of 2013. During his times with the Bruins, he went to three-straight Final Fours from 2006-08, including a runner-up in 2006. He also won the Pac-12 regular season title in his final season.
Before going to Los Angeles, Howland coached at Northern Arizona and Pittsburgh. He won league titles at both schools. Howland owns a 399-208 overall record.
He hasn’t coached the past two seasons, and has been a color commentator for both Fox Sports and NCB Sports college basketball broadcasts.
