The Mississippi State women’s team was hoping to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, but they will have to travel.
The Bulldogs earned a No. 5 seed and will play in the Durham, N.C., regional. They play No. 12 seed Tulane Friday at 1:30 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN2.
Also in the regional are No. 4 Duke and No. 13 Albany. The winners of the first two games will meet Sunday for a right to go to the Sweet 16.
“I’m excited for my players and for my staff,” MSU head coach Vic Schaefer said. “It’s a tremendous opportunity. I have a little experience in going to Duke and playing. We’re going to play a team I’m really familiar with in Tulane. We’ve had some experience with them in years past. This time of year everybody is good so we’re excited about the opportunity.”
It is the first appearance in the NCAA Tournament for MSU since making it to the Sweet 16 in 2010.
MSU is in the Spokane Region with Maryland being the No. 1 seed and Tennessee being the No. 2 seed.
The Bulldogs finished with a 26-6 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Southeastern Conference play. They finished third in the league.
