A source close to Mississippi State says Manny Diaz will be the new defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs.
Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel first reported the news on Monday afternoon.
Diaz will replace Geoff Collins who left to take the same position at Florida in December. Cornerbacks coach Deshea Townsend was the acting defensive coordinator as the Bulldogs lost 49-34 to Georgia Tech in the Capital One Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Diaz is currently the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech. He is in his first year. MSU and Louisiana Tech will meet in Starkville on Oct. 17 this season.
He was the Mississippi State defensive coordinator in 2010, but left to take the same position at Texas. He coached the Longhorns for two seasons before being fired.
Diaz also coaches linebackers, which is what Collins coached during his time with the Bulldogs.
