Entering his third year as the head coach of Mississippi State, Vic Schaefer is finally getting a little bit of recognition.
The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth in the Southeastern Conference by the coaches, and senior center Martha Alwal was selected to the preseason All-SEC First Team, as announced Wednesday.
“I still think we have to prove ourselves,” Schaefer said. “As I tell the team, ‘at some point you’ve got to stop talking the talk and you’ve got to walk the walk.’ I’ve been pretty complimentary of this group. My expectations are pretty high with this group. We have a tremendous opportunity. We still have got to go do it.”
South Carolina was picked to win the league, with MSU falling behind Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Georgia, Vanderbilt and LSU. Ole Miss was picked to finish last.
Alwal was selected to the All-SEC First Team for her play as a junior. She led the Bulldogs and was 12th in the league with 14.9 points per game a season ago. She was also selected to the SEC All-Defensive Team last year, for the second-straight year. She was the co-Defensive Player of the Year after averaging an SEC best 2.7 blocks per game.
The Bulldogs play Arkansas-Fort Smith in an exhibition matchup this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Humphrey Coliseum. They open the season with a Preseason NIT matchup with Mercer at home next Friday.
