If the season ended today, Mississippi State would be one of the four teams in the inaugural College Football Playoff.
The College Football Playoff selection committee released its first poll Tuesday night and the Bulldogs were ranked No. 1. MSU is the top-ranked team in the two other major polls – Associated Press and Amway Coaches.
The other three teams included No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Auburn and No. 4 Ole Miss. MSU would play in-state rival Ole Miss in New Orleans, while Florida State and Auburn would match up in the other semifinal game in Pasadena, Calif.
Oregon was No. 5, while Alabama was sixth.
The committee will release a poll every week, but Dec. 7’s will be the final poll featuring the two semifinal matchups.
Bulldog head coach Dan Mullen and his team were watching film after practice as the rankings were released.
“Our focus is on beating Arkansas,” Mullen said at his Monday press conference. “As soon as you start thinking too far ahead and not on beating the next opponent, you are not going to be very successful.”
