Blog – MSU baseball notebook: UGA, polls, RPI (with video)

 

 

Lucas Laster didn’t make the trip to Athens, Ga. in mid March for the first Southeastern Conference series for Mississippi State.

Now the junior left hander will take the mound as the No. 5 seed MSU Bulldogs play the No. 12 seed Georgia Bulldogs in the last game tonight in a loser go home scenario in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala.

“I’m excited I get to start in the SEC Tournament,” Laster said. “That’s always very exciting for somebody. If I can give our team a chance to win, that will make it even better.”

The game will start at approximately 8:30 p.m. The winner will move onto play No. 4 seed South Carolina on Wednesday night in the double-elimination format of the tournament.

Laster will be making his third start of the season and eighth appearance. He has yet to pick up a decision and owns a 1.52 earned run average.

The Lewisburg, Tenn. native started against Ole Miss in the Governor’s Cup and against Jacksonville State in a midweek game.

MSU (35-20) took two out of three from Georgia in the league series.

The Peach State Bulldogs will go with senior right hander Dylan Cole (1-0, 4.72 ERA) on the mound. He pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief against the Magnolia State Bulldogs in the regular season series. He didn’t allow a run and gave up just one hit in the Friday night win for Georgia.

Cole will be making his third start of the season and his 20th appearance.

MSU sees movement in polls

After taking two out of three from Alabama this past weekend, MSU moved up in two polls and dropped in one.

The biggest move came in the Baseball America poll where the Bulldogs moved from No. 20 to No. 18. They moved up one spot in the Perfect Game poll from No. 20 to No. 19.

In the Collegiate Baseball poll, the Bulldogs dropped from No. 16 to No. 17.

Bulldogs RPI jumps

MSU also so it’s RPI ranking move up with the series win over Alabama.

The Bulldogs jumped 12 spots to No. 30 in the weekly NCAA RPI rankings.
