The Bulldogs will wear these uniforms on Sunday as it is Mother’s Day.
Mississippi State finds itself in familiar territory.
The Bulldogs swept a road series at Missouri last month. They returned home to lose a Southeastern Conference series to Texas A&M.
The No. 18 Bulldogs (31-18, 14-10) swept Auburn last weekend and now come home for a weekend series with Tennessee (28-18, 10-14).
MSU head coach John Cohen doesn’t want history to repeat itself, instead he wants the Bulldogs to carry over momentum from the series win against the Tigers.
“We need to keep playing well and I think as a team we are playing pretty well right now,” he said.
Today’s game is set for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch, Saturday’s contest will begin at 6 p.m. and can be seen on CSS, while Sunday’s finale is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
The Bulldogs finally had all three weekend starters healthy and on point this past weekend. Trevor Fitts, Ross Mitchell and Preston Brown all tossed at least five innings last weekend and didn’t allow a run to Auburn.
This time the Bulldogs will go with the junior righty Fitts (4-2, 2.62 ERA) today, junior left hander Mitchell (7-4, 2.12 ERA) Saturday with Sunday’s starter yet to be announced.
Cohen says Brown is still in the mix, but also says junior lefty Lucas Laster has a chance to start as well.
“We’re really going to have to look at Tennessee just from the standpoint of if we feel like we need to be a little bit more left handed, then you have Laster,” Cohen said.
Laster has made two midweek starts this season and made six appearances. He owns an earned run average of 2.00. He has struck out 12 batters, walked two but he has hit seven batters.
Brown is 4-1 with a 2.28 ERA.
The Volunteers will go with freshman right hander Hunter Martin (3-3, 2.85 ERA) today, senior righty Nick Williams (5-4, 3.73 ERA) Saturday and sophomore lefty Andy Cox (4-1 1.87) in the finale.
