The No. 23 Mississippi State Bulldogs (13-7) travel to Athens, Ga. to take on the Georgia Bulldogs (12-6) in a three-game weekend series to start the Southeastern Conference portion of the schedule.
UGA has won 10-straight and 11 of its last 12 games.
“Georgia’s a really talented club,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “Georgia might be the premier amateur baseball state in the country. You’re starting to see every Division I team in the state of Georgia’s good. Georgia’s certainly part of that. They have a new coach, so there’s new idea and new energy.”
The pitching matchups look like:
Friday – MSU senior RHP Ben Bracewell (2-1, 1.74) vs. UGA sophomore LHP Ryan Lawlor (1-1, 6.61 ERA)
Saturday – MSU junior RHP Trevor Fitts (2-0, 3.92 ERA) vs. UGA freshman RHP Robert Taylor (1-0, 0.93 ERA)
Sunday – MSU TBD vs. UGA senior left hander Patrick Boling (2-1, 2.57 ERA)
“We felt like the evaluation of the first couple of months of the season, Benny deserved that opportunity,” Cohen said. “It’s not a negative thing toward anyone else. Benny’s been around for a while. He’s a fifth-year senior and he really understands all the little nuances of the game and does a great job controlling the running game and fielding his position. He’s throwing the baseball really well in the early portion of the year.”
