Dan Mullen finally has his coaching staff in place according to HailState.com’s Bob Carskadon.
After losing offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Les Koenning and strength and conditioning coach Matt Balis, Mullen announced the new and improved coaching staff.
It was learned earlier last week that Utah quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson was going to join the MSU staff, although it was unclear in what capacity.
Johnson will be the quarterbacks coach and tweeted out “Thank you for all the kind words. Utah will always have a special place in my heart. Looking forward to a new opportunity #HailState” Monday morning.
Wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales and offensive line coach John Hevesy were promoted to co-offensive coordinators.
Hevesy was a part of Mullen’s original coaching staff when he took the job in 2009. Gonzales was brought in last season to coach wide receivers. Mullen and Gonzales coached together under current Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. Before coming to MSU, Gonzales co-offensive coordinator at Illinois in 2012 and served as the passing game coordinator at LSU from 2010-11.
Running backs coach Greg Knox added the role of special teams coordinator. Knox has coached the Bulldog running backs since 2009. The last time he coached special teams was at Stephen F. Austin from 1992-94.
Mullen had handled the duties of special teams in his five seasons as the head coach, but other coaches helped him in the different alignments such as kickoffs, extra points, etc.
