Blog – Baseball to start fall practice (with video)

Mississippi State is coming of a College World Series runner up and start the campaign to return on Friday.

The Bulldogs start fall camp on Friday with practice 2:30 p.m. and scrimmage at 4:30. Saturday will feature an 11 a.m. practice and 1:30 p.m. scrimmage. Sunday’s practice starts at 10:30 a.m. and scrimmage at noon.

All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.

We caught up with head coach John Cohen, junior left hander Ross Mitchell and junior first baseman Wes Rea.

Mitchell will be shut down this fall after having surgery on his hip during the summer. Senior second baseman Brett Pirtle won’t be here this weekend. He will be attending his brother’s wedding. Junior RHP Brandon Woodruff’s timetable for fall camp is unknown at this time. The team has also been affected by the flu and some players will not play this weekend.

We also got to look at the new turf at Dudy Noble Field. I posted several pictures on Twitter. The only thing I didn’t like about it, and my opinion doesn’t matter, was the new turf around home plate and down the first and third base foul lines.

I will have a fall practice preview is Friday’s paper.
