Mississippi State’s second practice of the fall started early in the morning.
I rolled out of bed about 7:15 a.m., brushed my teeth, put on some deodorant and I was out the door. I arrived just in time to catch most of the 7:30 a.m. practice. It was the first day of two-a-days with split-squads.
The early morning practice featured most of the starters and the freshman. Senior running back LaDarius Perkins was not with the ones as he had an early morning summer class.
Senior quarterback Tyler Russell, offensive coordinator Les Koenning, defensive coordinator Geoff Collins, junior wide receiver Robert Johnson and sophomore linebacker Benardrick McKinney joined us today.
We saw a good amount of freshman getting work including many of the freshman wide receivers. Fred Ross stood out to me yesterday, but today he didn’t do much as it seemed like he hurt himself at one point in practice and didn’t return for the rest of practice. He stayed in what they call “the pit” where he worked on a few things.
Other freshman wide receivers, B.J. Hammond, De’Runnya Wilson and Shelby Christy got a lot of work. So did freshman quarterback Damien Williams, who worked along side Russell.
The second practice of the day (number three) will take place at 4:45 p.m. (not 6 p.m.) and will feature most of the number twos and threes. It is also open to the public.
I will have a story and a notebook in tomorrow’s SDN.
