Evan Mitchell has not seen in game action since March 23rd.
The Mississippi State junior right hander was unable to record an out against Kentucky on March 23rd. He gave up three runs but didn’t not give up a hit. He walked three batters though.
Mitchell (0-1, 4.12) will get a chance to redeem himself. MSU head coach John Cohen will let Mitchell get the start on the mound against Memphis on Tuesday.
“Evan has worked extremely hard in his bullpens and his preparations, and we just feel like he’s earned this opportunity and we want to reward him,” Cohen said in a phone interview on Monday. “We feel like we are a better pitching staff when he’s part of it.
“Even though he hasn’t pitched in a game, he has pitched in some inter-squad type games. Some simulated stuff. He has done very good there and he’s really commanded the baseball well. He’s earned this opportunity and certainly we wouldn’t put him out there if we didn’t think he had the opportunity to pitch well.”
The Bulldogs (32-10) and Tigers (25-16) will face off at 6:30 p.m. at Autozone Park, home of the St. Louis Cardinals AAA team, the Memphis Redbirds.
