Mississippi State defensive back and former East Webster player Johnthan Banks turned down the opportunity to enter the 2012 NFL Draft.
In doing so, he likely walked away from an early round selection and a hefty payday.
The reward for the former Wolverine is to enter the 2012 season on center stage with the spotlight shining brightly.
On Monday, Banks was listed among 15 Southeastern Conference players to the Bednarik Award watchlist, the honor bestowed upon the nation’s top defensive performer.
Banks, with 12 career interceptions, will chase the benchmark of 16 set by former Bulldog Walt Harris.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced October 29, and the three finalists will be unveiled November 19. The winner of the 2012 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on December 6.
